Emergency Preparedness Reduces Chaos

Preparation is key to coordinated response and communication

Technology alone is not a complete solution to crisis management.  In addition to powerful and reliable tools like ACME's Command & Control, organizations need policies, procedures and training to be prepared for an emergency and to get the best value out of their systems. Crisis breeds chaos, but the antidote to chaos is preparation.

While it's understandable that such horrific events cause mayhem, a lack of preparedness undermines communication and proper responses.  A lack of this preparation leads to slow response times, delayed action (on the part of first responders, students, teachers, employees, etc.) and general confusion across the entire incident spectrum.  Putting in place meaningful policies and procedures that are based on national best practices is critical to minimizing chaos and giving your people the opportunity for the best outcomes.  Backing these protocols is on-going training, at least annually, to remind and reinforce good responses as well as promote an overall awareness of safety.

There was a day in the United States when fires in schools caused similar outcomes. However, since 1948, when fire alarms, fire drills, prevention and improved situational awareness became part of everyday life, there has not been a single death due to a fire in a school. Schools, first responders, teachers and students, all know what to do in the event of a fire.

We now have the opportunity to do the same in the event of a school shooting.

While there are many aspects to consider, including facility design, staffing, gun issues and mental health, schools and facilities of all types benefit from being proactively prepared with policies, coordinated systems, and crisis communications to protect life and minimize harm when events do occur.
